How Do We Check The Brake Pads By Ourselves?

Jul. 10, 2019

Find here details of Mazda Brake Pad on our website. Today we would like to talk about how do we check the brake pads by ourselves.

Method 1: Look at the thickness

A new brake pad thickness is generally around 1.5cm, which will gradually become thinner as the friction is constant during use. Professional technicians suggest that when the thickness of the brake pads is only about 1/3 of the original thickness (about 0.5 cm), the owner will increase the self-test frequency and be ready to replace it. Of course, due to the design of the wheel hub, individual models do not have the conditions for visual inspection, and it is necessary to disassemble the tires to complete. Each brake pad has a raised mark on both sides. The thickness of this mark is about two or three millimeters. This is the limit of the thinnest replacement of the brake disc. If the thickness of the brake pad is parallel to this mark, it must be replaced. Therefore, when the thickness of the brake pad is close to this mark, the owner must observe and prepare at any time, but it is difficult to accurately observe it through the naked eye without disassembling the tire. At present, many models have the position of the hand brake light when the brake pad is too thin. Prompt, relative self-test is more convenient.

Small suggestion by Mazda Brake Pad Exporter: The brake pads are not strictly replaced according to the car environment and driving habits. Generally, it is necessary to consider replacing them after driving about 60,000 kilometers. When the naked eye observes that the brake pads are thin, they should be inspected by technicians during maintenance. Because there is an error in the visual inspection, the professional service station is more rigorous than the naked eye through the caliper.

Method 2: Listen to the sound

If the brakes are accompanied by the sound of “iron-iron” (which may also be the result of the wear-off of the brake pads at the beginning of installation), the brake pads must be replaced immediately. Because the limit marks on both sides of the brake pads have directly rubbed the brake discs, it proves that the brake pads have exceeded the limit. In this case, when the brake pads are replaced, the brake discs should be checked. When such a sound occurs, the brake discs are already damaged. (As shown in the figure below), even if a new brake pad is replaced, the sound cannot be eliminated. In severe cases, the brake disc needs to be replaced. In addition, some bad quality brake pads have hard spots, which will also produce abnormal noise. In general, the abnormal noise generated will disappear after a period of wear.
